Common Stone Types
It is a deep-seated position of the Ventura Stone that there is no such thing as a “bad” or unusable natural stone. There are however, inappropriate uses of natural stone for a given application, and unrealistic uses of a natural stone type in a specific application.
The selection of natural stone products and its application is influenced by the likes and dislikes of the end buyer. Many buyers like the look of natural wear, etching, or weathering that brings out the hidden charm, or natural “patina” of some natural stones. But to other buyers, the only acceptable presentation is for the natural stone to maintain its immaculate, “new” look for the entire period of its operational life.
With so many selections of natural stone types available there are enough variations to satisfy both users. The designer must ensure that the proper research is completed to guarantee that the selected natural stone (Granite, Marble, etc) will perform in service as the designer and buyer required. The key is performance. For example: If a rock is sold within a certain granite classification or group, the natural stone must performance its function that is similar, or in some cases superior, to that of true granite.
The natural stone selection must never under perform because of misapplication. For example: Using a soft Marble natural stone that is easily damaged in a high abrasion area would be a bad choice and would fail and become non performing before the completion of it expected service life. This will not happen if proper research and observation of the stones proposed work environment is done.
In the next series of article we will cover and discuss the types and performance of the natural stone types available and their best applications. We also talk about areas where the performance of the stone will fail and should not be used without proper precautions.
